"About two-thirds of Republican lawmakers refused to back the rescue package, as well as 95 Democrats...

Speaking after the vote, Republican leaders in the House of Representatives suggested the Democrats were to blame, accusing them of failing to mobilise their majority in the chamber."

Source: BBC News

Read that again.

2/3 of the Republicans voted against it.
2/3 of the Democrats voted in favour.

The Republican house leaders say the Democrats are to blame for the failure of the package.

Remember... THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO ARE GOING TO SAVE YOUR ECONOMY!

... wait, I have to wrap my mind around that. The Republicans are taking the position that, although their representatives voted en mass against the bill, the fault for it not passing lies with the Democrats for not voting sufficiently in favour of it to overcome the Republican opposition.

Ssssssso they wanted the bill to pass, but didn't want to be responsible for the bill passing?

I think what it means is, the Republicans weren't able to mobilize their majority in the chamber, but the democrats were, except the Republicans are saying they weren't, which is backwards bizzaro world logic. ^.^;;

This kind of works well for me since I have a low priced stock mutual fund. Right now, they're all low priced! A hundred bucks reinvestment buys like a thousand right now. Well, that's hyperbole, but, still. Now all this predicated on the outcome of the game of chicken the congress is playing with credit markets.

The President, of our party, whose every proposal we rubber stamped for SIX YEARS now puts something out there, but you'll have to pass it because it is unpopular. So if it doesn't pass, your to blame, and if it does and goes wrong, you're to blame.

Makes perfect sense in GOPspeak.

I for one was not interested in being *forced* into investing my money (in the form of paid taxes) into these failing companies. Not only would I have been forced to invest against my will, but if by some miracle the companies did start to do well in the future (meaning my "investment" pays off) I'd likely not see a dime of the money.

My representative is a republican, and he voted against it. I'm quite impressed.

Whether or not the bailout is a good idea(I am no economist, and I also think your stance is quite valid), the stupidity is in the finger-pointing in this one.

The Republicans came up with the idea. I would not put it past them to then vote against it, and try to make that into a PR coup. I am sort of glad the bailout failed, but obviously, I haven't been running long on trust for the Democrats.

Difference is, when it comes to the economy who are you going to trust less? Someone you has proven themselves to be untrustworthy and opportunistic, or someone who has proven themselves to be ethically bankrupt nepotistic profiteers?

No way. I live with two cats and I used to work animal rescue. So here's my impression of a certain candidate; "I may not be considered Miss Congeniality in the Senate, but I look into those eyes and I see the letters F O O D?."

Of course they'll save the economy - they seem to be doing well with some basic comparisons of fractions. :)

Does the economy even need saving? If it's in the news, and particularly if a politician is saying it (and especially if the politician's name is George), I have a bias towards doubting that it's even real.

Doublethink number-spinning aside, I'm not sure whether this failure to pass is a good thing or a bad thing. On the one hand, it's clear the world's sliding into a recession, if not a depression. On the other, putting $700 BILLION into the hands of someone whose authority cannot be questioned (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/22/dirty-secret-of-the-bailo_n_128294.html)? AHAHA no.
