The cheapest hyperdrive capable ship I know of for the old Star Wars RPG is a class of medium freighter that sells for 17,500 credits. Other ships sell from 25,000 to 100,000 up.

The cheapest Jump-equipped ship available in Traveller costs several million credits, and has a monthly upkeep of thousands of credits. The value of a credit is roughly the same in both games. So, in Star Wars ships are sort of like... transport trucks and pleasure boats. In Traveller, they are more like airplanes, so far as I can figure.

Speaking of rockets! [livejournal.com profile] sassy_fae got me a Mentos Rocket for my birthday! We launched it today, in the interest of determining the superiority of liquid-fuel launch vehicles over solid state boosters... It was not a complete success. The rocket reached a maximum height of about 2 inches.

SCIENCE!!

Frame analysis of the firing has also provided me with some rough data on the velocity of the Mousehold I probe.

The camera was filming at 14 frames per second. In between frames 2 and 3, the rocket has cleared the height of the launch tower, about 75 cm.

So, 0.75 m in 1/14 of a second means 10.5 m/s, or 630 metres a minute, or 37,800 metres an hour, or 37.8 kmph (23.4 mph). Or, to put it another way, roughly 0.09% of escape velocity.

I'm going to need about a thousand more engines! Right? It works that way, right? More seriously, I think my digital camera can be set for 30 fps. I'll try that for the next launch.

Frame by frame analysis of the high resolution descent video enabled recovery crews to focus on a smaller search area during their second sweep.

The stray rocket was found entangled on the corner of a roof, aproximately 105 metres from the launch site. Temporary allocation of a step ladder and broom from the homeowner allowed full repatriation of the Mousehold I probe.

"...who cares vere zey come down? Zat's not my department," says Werner von Braun!

I went to Hamilton Hobby and bought a couple of rockets. One, an "all-in-one" kit based on the Star Wars Naboo fighter, and the other a skill 1 kit. I put the Star Wars one together in an hour or so, and took the girls across the street to launch it.

Elizabeth, with her hand on the button. No, the key was not in at this point.

And now, let's go to the video feed...
It was a bright, cold day... )
