"Once the rockets are up..."
Feb. 28th, 2009 04:07 pm"...who cares vere zey come down? Zat's not my department," says Werner von Braun!
I went to Hamilton Hobby and bought a couple of rockets. One, an "all-in-one" kit based on the Star Wars Naboo fighter, and the other a skill 1 kit. I put the Star Wars one together in an hour or so, and took the girls across the street to launch it.

The Naboo Fighter (hereafter known as the Mousehold I) on the launch pad.

Elizabeth, with her hand on the button. No, the key was not in at this point.
And now, let's go to the video feed...
I forgot rule #1 of model rockets.
"YOU ALWAYS NEED A BIGGER FIELD."

Click on the image to launch the video.
The laugh at the end is me realizing it's coming down in a random backyard, two or three streets over. I did drive up and down, looking for it, and talked to one homeowner, and snuck into a yard, but my best efforts at recovery were in vain.
Ah well. Live and learn.

Date: 2009-03-01 12:24 am (UTC)I'll have to unpack and put together my own rocket.
I'll also try launching it on a windless day from a large field, after seeing your example.

Date: 2009-03-01 02:55 pm (UTC)After we got home, she spent a good part of the afternoon with a handful of crayons, lying under her litte plastic chair. It has a hole in the seat, and she'd push a crayon partially through this hole, and say, "3, 2, 1, Blastoff!" Then she'd push the crayon up through the hole and it'd fly upwards a couple of inches.
