2/3 of the Republicans voted against it.
2/3 of the Democrats voted in favour.

The Republican house leaders say the Democrats are to blame for the failure of the package.

... wait, I have to wrap my mind around that. The Republicans are taking the position that, although their representatives voted en mass against the bill, the fault for it not passing lies with the Democrats for not voting sufficiently in favour of it to overcome the Republican opposition.

Well, that's hyperbole, but, still. Now all this predicated on the outcome of the game of chicken the congress is playing with credit markets.

I for one was not interested in being *forced* into investing my money (in the form of paid taxes) into these failing companies. Not only would I have been forced to invest against my will, but if by some miracle the companies did start to do well in the future (meaning my "investment" pays off) I'd likely not see a dime of the money.

My representative is a republican, and he voted against it. I'm quite impressed.

The Republicans came up with the idea. I would not put it past them to then vote against it, and try to make that into a PR coup. I am sort of glad the bailout failed, but obviously, I haven't been running long on trust for the Democrats.

Difference is, when it comes to the economy who are you going to trust less? Someone you has proven themselves to be untrustworthy and opportunistic, or someone who has proven themselves to be ethically bankrupt nepotistic profiteers?

I think what it means is, the Republicans weren't able to mobilize their majority in the chamber, but the democrats were, except the Republicans are saying they weren't, which is backwards bizzaro world logic. ^.^;;

Does the economy even need saving? If it's in the news, and particularly if a politician is saying it (and especially if the politician's name is George), I have a bias towards doubting that it's even real.

Doublethink number-spinning aside, I'm not sure whether this failure to pass is a good thing or a bad thing. On the one hand, it's clear the world's sliding into a recession, if not a depression.
