One quick photo before we run off again to Thanksgiving Dinner...

Our first SCA event was a success, I think, and I am rapidly thinking of a persona. More pics later!

Awesome pic! Great garb! Of course it would have been more perfect if the cars weren't in the way...but my mother always says that's why they call it the society of creative ANACHRONISM! ;-)

We need pix of YOU in garb too, remember.

Happy Thanksgiving!! :-)

I think the cars actually make it perfect :)

Done, and posted!

And Happy Canadian Turkey Day to you, too!

Awesome! Did you take the kids? SCA events can be fabulous places for children to learn about history.

We did, and they had a ball. There was a family there who had brought a bunch of outgrown kids' garb in case any kids showed up without any, and they had things to fit both of them. And they'd be easy to make, too, when the girls outgrow them!

There was a playground, toy bows and arrows and older kids willing to help them use them, colouring and bead-necklace-making, green grass and blue sky and perfect temperatures. It was lovely.

Welsh for SCA, you mean? :)

WOAH. That picture looks like it came from one of those 1960s "bible study booklets" that they used to hand out to children, just because of the colors, the styles on the dresses, and the flowing sleeves. I thought at first that it was one of those commercial-painting things.

Then, it suddenly looks WRONG because of the modern cars in the background.

I approve.

As a former Sunday School student and teacher, I know exactly what you mean.

*is jealous*

One of these days, when (miraculously!) I have enough free time, I would LOVE to get involved with the SCA again. It's been years... not since my first couple of years of university.

Well, we seem to have decided we like it, so if you ever want to ride along, just ask. :)

We used to go. A SCA person in Saskatoon made our wedding outfits!

What did you think of it? Was it enjoyable even after the novelty factor had worn off?

I went to the local arts and sciences a few times, a small meeting of women who were friendly. I started to find it difficult to find the time, though, and stopped going.

I think we actually only went to one event. Again, time a big factor. But also, getting to know people and feeling welcome was a bit of an issue. We did have fun that one time, but felt very outside of it all.

Probably didn't give it enough of a try. I was a bit uncomfortable with the persona idea. And I didn't have the strength at the time to deal with a new community's issues (as the woman who made our clothes said: always the same people, complaining about the same things - in reference to a problematic group within the group in SK).

I really like the re-creation idea. Such as, learning to weave and actually doing it or something. But who has the time? And, it also seemed a bit competitive (people's knowledge or lack of).

I think it would make an awesome holiday if someone did a castle up medevil (sp?) and people could come and participate in various roles - like a dude ranch, only way cooler.

So, there are some random thoughts.
