Whatever you may think of Hackmaster, I have to say that I really like the combat example for the new edition. The rules I can take or leave, but I like the way they've presented it as a comic.

Also, for those unfamiliar with the characters, those are the Knights of the Dinner Table. The art is meant to look like that. ;)

1. I really do like the comic-rules explanation thing - it seems like a really nice way of linking up "here's this dramatic story" with "and here's the rules that make it happen." I've seen it in Werewolf, and this is kinda a neat twist on it, linking up Hackmaster origins as a reference in KotDT with the current game.

2. That said, Knights of the Dinner Table bugs the hell out of me. I used to think stuff like that and DM of the Rings were freakin' hilarious, but I think it's an age thing, I burned out on the genre.

Re: 2, I often tell people that it's "not like that anymore," but often it is. They don't make rules jokes as much anymore, and the characters have honestly become more sympathetic since the early days of the comic. But the stuff you didn't like is still undeniably there.

One thing that has improved is that B.A.'s games can actually be fairly epic and gripping - the plotlines last for dozens of issues.

Yea, I like the presentation, but those rules...yikes, that's a lot of effort just to take on a few goblins!

Comic rules explanation=good!

Fiddly rules=not so good!

I remember futzing around with weapon reach affecting initiative, etc., back playing AD&D in the early 80s. We quickly gave up on it (along with other things as encumbrance rules, counting down every spent torch using a burnt wooden match as a token, etc.,) as being too fiddly and getting in the way.
