[livejournal.com profile] velvetpage kindly gave me the evening free, so I went out to see Watchmen with [livejournal.com profile] catsarah. Lo, it was good.

I am going to be so tired in the morning.

PS: Driving home through the mist, down the escarpment, cars shifted and slowed and moved to let me pass. The Haunted Police Car looks very official at night, and that can be sort of cool. Except when people on the street give me the finger randomly.

Well, that seems to be true. I'm sleepy, but feeling in generally better spirits.

Please don't tell people about how I screamed like a little girl and climbed under the seats.

Do you think the Watchmen movie is something someone with no familiarity with the comic can get into?

Roger Ebert gave it 4/4 stars, and I don't think he's read the graphic novel. What his endorsement means is, whether or not it's accurate to the novel, it's a good movie, in his opinion.

If anything, being a comic nerd will mean you're less likely to like it.

[livejournal.com profile] catsarah had never read it, and quite enjoyed the film, certainly.

Yeah, fans of comics might be a little reserved about it. Fans of Alan Moore are probably going to be very guarded. But fans of the better comics-to-movies adaptations of the last decade or two will probably get a big kick out of it, I gather.

Lee.

A friend of mine who has not read the comic did not like the ending. I can't really go into details of what he specifically didn't like without giving spoilers, but since this didn't really follow the formula of most action movies, he was disappointed.

He was also of the opinion that Doc Manhattan wasn't the only one with superpowers, given that all the other masked heroes were able to break bones and throw people across the room. That was a result of Hollywood embellishment, though, and not really part of the original story. I explained to him that they were all supposedly Batman-level regular humans, but he didn't buy it.

Yeah, I think only Ozymandias should have been doing the casual super-kung-fu-leg-breaker stuff.
