From [livejournal.com profile] velvetpage. if $100K landed in your lap (lottery) what would you do with it?

1.2 million mechanically separated chicken and pork wieners.

1) pay approximately half of it as taxes, and hire a tax lawyer to recover some portion of that.

2) buy or build a comfortable duplex somewhere near where I work. If such a thing exists. Then, convince my mother and stepfather to move into one of the units, selling their current home.

Uh, you don't pay taxes on lottery winnings. So that saves you 50 grand.

Yeah, actually, you DO pay taxes on lottery winnings. Federal for sure. State if it's not one of those supported by the state.

Still depends on the lottery. If you win a US based lottery you will be taxed the federal portion (because they're moneyvampires). They will take it before you get the payment.

If I won a Canadian lottery I would be required to pay taxes on it. (I'm totally surprised that it wouldn't be subject to VAT.)

GST, I think you mean - VAT is British. Same thing, though.

By VAT do you mean GST? No. (http://www.olg.ca/lotteries/guide/international_residents.jsp) You'd probably have to deal with US tax stuff, but not Canadian.

Well, you know what they say. Give man mechanically separated chicken and pork wieners and he has barbecue for a day. Give him a mechanical meat separator and what he does behind closed doors is no one's business.

See, that's what I respect about you, Pyat. You set your sights on a dream, and you make it yours. <nods>

Display them in Hamilton Harbour, roped together as a giant floating island.

That'd bite a big chunk out of the mortgage. God, I'm dull. Oh, and with a small chunk, I'd buy myself a new (budget-box) computer.

Take a year off to attempt to write a book. ...maybe? if I could afford to do that, on that much?

What I think is nearly as amusing about this post is that you used my slight rewording of the meme instead of the original (and left Erin's name on it.) You were not the first to do so either! I think I shall slightly reword memes in the future was well, and explore this phenomenon. :)

I dunno. I mean, I love Vienna sausages, but I don't think I could ever eat all that many. Wouldn't you rather save some of that money for Spam, Hormel Deviled Ham Spread, and investments like that?
