So. 10:35 PM. Sitting in front of the computer, waiting for the Canada Day fireworks to stop so I can go to bed.

I hear a "click, click" at the front door - the sound of the bolt being drawn. I stand up, and I hear the bolt hastily being slid back in place. I step into the hallway, and there is my 2-year-old, in her footie pajamas, on tip toes, with a sippy cup gripped in her teeth, closing and locking the front door.

Time to get a deadbolt on the doorframe, several feet off the ground...

Egads!

Mini Houdini is similarly capable of escaping bed, I take it?

Not usually, though if the chair is near the bed she can!

Any clue whether she was coming or going?

I suspect "What's that noise?" was in her sneaky little head.

*nods* She was definitely on her way to see the fireworks. She'd seen some earlier in the evening.

See, this is how to work it: first you need sensors on the doors and windows, to keep your precious kids safe. Then, you need a centralized monitor for them. And automatic deadbolts. And then, since you're rewiring the house anyhow, that's when the computer-targeted dart guns loaded with animal tranqs go in, and then you build the turret with the lightning cannon! And and.. and..

...

Yeah, a deadbolt would be better. But think about the motion sensor, too. That one seems to have a death wish..

Hey! Lunch?

Next week, for sure. We'll hash out the details.

You realize, of course, that she was sneaking back in...

And it would explain her "Blue's Clues" tattoo!

Uh. She's a very good climber... I'm thinking the deadbolt isn't gonna cut it. Coded lock, perhaps?

The screen door has a bolt she can't reach, and would not have the strength to open - I've left it on today and she can't get out. But a coded lock is definitely the next step.

She knows which button does what on the tv, and has started to figure out the VCR - she knows stop, play, and "hit stop twice for eject." If we did the coded lock, I'd give her three months to figure it out - and then where do we go from there?
