velvetpage reports that it is 9 C (48 F) in the main floor of the house. Warmer upstairs. I suspect the basement is an ice cavern. I'll check when I get home.

Hmmm. Try boiling a few pots of water on the stove? Not only will the heat from the stove end up in the air, but the increased humidity will make it feel less cold and dry. You can use a fan to blow the warm humid air into the rest of the house.
Of course this requires constant supervision, but it's better than shivering your butt off I guess...
