The job is making me feel old and angry. I'm not getting enough sleep, but that's nothing new. I think it's related to commuting. I've slept badly since 2004, when I started working at COPA. I'm feeling terribly run down and irritable. I'm being asked to do things that are not within my competencies or my interests.

(As I observed to [livejournal.com profile] sassy_fae, it's like a band of munchkins have run up to me with a Latin encyclopedia and asked me to teach them Latin. And I say, "I don't know any Latin." And then they pull out guns and say, "Yes you do!")

I am not getting rich or happy, nor making anyone else happy, particularly.

One day you'll wake up in the present day
A million generations removed from expectations
Of being who you really want to be...

Progrock lyrics are suddenly meaning a lot to me (and [livejournal.com profile] thebitterguy, it seems!) Heh. And I probably picked the absolute wrong time to re-read Keep the Aspidistra Flying.

So as you push off from the shore
Won't you turn your head once more
And make your peace with everyone
For those who choose to stay
Will live just one more day
To do the things they should have done

I've worked late two nights this week, and will work late again. I know - I don't owe them anything. But I feel an obligation, nonetheless. If they fail, it won't be because of me.

So, you gave notice. Does that mean you have a set end-date? That can be difficult. When I quit my hospital job, I had to give 90 days notice. It was quite an uncomfortable 90 days. But I'm curious. You said:

If they fail, it won't be because of me.

But if they don't fail, perhaps that will be because of you. And they won't notice or appreciate it anyway. If I were you, I'd do work-to-rule. If you burn the candle at both ends, it's possible you could get sick and leave them empty-handed anyway. Better to pace yourself.

I rather foolishly gave a month's notice out of a sense of obligation. There is no way they could bring on a new writer and have them learn the content fast enough to get these projects out in time to meet contracted deadlines.

Of course, as I am realizing, there is almost not way I could get them out either. You'd have to be Doctor Who, I think.

Why do you have an obligation to this company? I mean, yes, they have paid you money, but you have busted your ass for them and ensured that they've made a lot more money than they've paid you.

It seems like this company is going under. It doesn't seem like anyone who works there would be able to give you a positive reference. You've clearly hated the place with every fiber of your being for months now.

You once told me (paraphrased), if a job is bad for a day, it's a bad day. If it's bad for a week, it's a bad week. And if it's bad for a month, it's well past time to leave.

You have a fallback, and Erin's pining for better days, and this place isn't going to be around long enough for the "May we contact this employer?" box on any of your future applications to matter. Tell 'em to shove it, man.

Life is too short. You're going to spend 1/3rd or more of your life at your job. Make it one that you can at least get some enjoyment out of.

I have the same philosophy on purchasing bedding, too. :)

At least every day's a new day. Mind the thin ice...

Piet, I hope you find the right place at the right time and what-not.

My "theme song" is about skating too - Joni Mitchell "the River."
