I believe I have earned my two days of vacation next week. I'd intended to leave work early today, after an unplanned extended lunch with new friend [livejournal.com profile] kores_rabbit and long-time acquaintance Jonathan Lavallee (who has an LJ, but I can't remember his username!) We were all free at the same time, and decided to meet. Alas, the evil forces of capitalism conspired against me, so I just barely had time to run out, wolf down something healthy, and jog back to work.

Yes.... healthy. "As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly." (Proverbs 26:11)

[livejournal.com profile] kores_rabbit! Calling Jonathan.

My lunch buddies!

Also - to those in fear for my arteries - I got a small poutine.

That place is apparently opening a restaurant here. I'm excited, although my waistline and arteries are dreading it.

Get the small, and only go once a season, and it's practically health food! :)

What's a poutine?

What's a poutine?? WHAT'S A POUTINE??? Good grief!

This! (http://pyat.livejournal.com/824101.html#cutid2) And that! (http://pyat.livejournal.com/840625.html)

Basically, it's french fries and cheese curds, with hot gravy poured over it. And sometimes, as you can see, other ingredients. :)

You know, I've only been there once, but I wasn't impressed.

But, are you a fan of poutine in the first place? I admit that I prefer the Harvey's poutine most of the time.

Yes! I'm a tremendously huge fan of poutine. I don't know that I'd even call what I got there "poutine". The gravy, which of course they call sauce, is... well, sauce. It's too thin. And somehow none of it came together. They're a neat place to go if you want well-topped fries, with lots of discrete things on them. But poutine should melt together into one entity, one item. Instead, it was like fries in a thin broth with some cheese hanging around in the vicinity. I admit that I had the veggie poutine, because I'm vegetarian, and so maybe that affected things, but I've had plenty of veggie poutine done right, and that wasn't it.

Yep - I confess that the gravy (or sauce) there isn't usually hot enough when it's busy. But I've been there once or twice and had good stuff. I like the curry chicken one. :)

Vegetarian poutine!?

Yes. You just substitute a vegetarian gravy for the meat-based gravy. Personally, I like peppercorn gravy, but a lot of places substitute a mushroom gravy or a generic "brown" gravy. I actually discovered that a few of the chains in Quebec have all their poutine vegetarian because they use a soy-based brown gravy (presumably because it's cheaper).

I'm totally surprised. Wouldn't have accured to me to even ask. Next time I'm near a fry place, I'll ask!
