Family
I have one! I love them very much.
velvetpage and I have been together 15 years, and she still manages to surprise me sometimes. Elizabeth and Claire are wonderful, creative little girls who are growing up to be very interesting people.
Nerdery
I am very much a nerd, of a certain kind. I like nerds. All my best friends are nerds. In the company of nerds, I can be expansive, witty, and a raconteur. They are my people. I go to conventions because I like being in a place full of enthusiastic happy people, no matter how odd they are. I don’t like to use the phrase “mundane.” But, I admit that when I’m placed in a room with people who regard nerdish pursuits as childish or uninteresting, I turn into a stammering, awkward, bumbling weirdo.
Furry
Ah, yes. Furry. I attend conventions, hang out on FurryMUCK, and sell books to people dressed as skunks. I really enjoy Furry fandom, even if the interactions are sometimes odd. They’re no odder, as a whole, than anime fans (for example) and tend to be less poisoned by irony.
Mice
I like mice, or at least fictional representations of intelligent mice. Real mice are interesting as well, but rather too stupid and too fragile to make ideal pets, IMHO. Reepicheep is very cool.
Awesome
Many things and people are awesome. A nice breeze from Lake Ontario is awesome. Eggs Benedict at 8 AM at Paddington’s Pump are awesome. Cool rainy days are awesome. I think everyone reading this is awesome – this may be the first time since I started Livejournal that I didn’t have any clunkers on my Friend’s List.

Dungeons and Dragons…well that is certainly my game of choice. More than any other game system, D&D resonates in my brain. I’ve been working on a D&D game world called The Maze for more than 12 years now, although it could be said that my earlier attempts at game world creation were always incarnations of The Maze, just crude test versions. I’ve FINALLY got a game started in the Maze, so my concepts are at last getting tested in the “real” world, and things seem to be working out, at least so far.
Fatherhood
Ah, being a DAD! As a result of my wife’s medical crisis after giving birth, I’ve been taking care of my son since the day he was born, and as a result probably feel much more connected with him than I would have under more regular circumstances. Having my wife in a touch and go situation in the ICU and a newborn at home with me certainly put many of life’s subsequent challenges in perspective. Liam is a fantastic kid, and I am so very, very proud of how he is growing up!
Hamilton
Love it or hate it? I left Hamilton once, moved to Toronto, and am now back as a result of having a family and needing a reasonably priced house and a decent school for Liam, but I cannot say that this is my favourite place in the universe. When I left Hamilton it was a dump, a city spiraling down with no bottom in sight, and now that I’m back here it is still spiraling. Yes, my family and some good friends live here, and the particular part of Hamilton I live in is OK, but just being here is a drain of energy, fighting the general malaise instead of the city being an energetic, life-affirming place to belong.
Illusionists
My character Eidolon, an Illusionist from Piet’s campaign is my most successful character ever. One of the reasons I like the D&D system (before version 4) so much is its treatment of magical Illusions. Over the years I explored many a game system, but no one else seemed to “get” the whole idea of illusions so well. Illusion is also something that separates the true creativity of a tabletop role-playing game vs. any computer/gamebox experience. They won’t be true roleplaying till they let me be an illusionist!
Anglican
Well, this is another area of mixed feelings. I was raised Anglican, and attend on a regular basis, and have even spent a few years on Parish Council and as a delegate to Synod, but the Church remains a fairly frustrating place to attend. This is another area where my Toronto experience outshines what I endure in this city. My original Hamilton Parish was a stagnant, negative place tightly controlled by bitterly miserable old people. For many years in my teens I was the only person who attended regularly between the ages of 5 and 42. Leaving the city and attending an Anglican church in T.O. was a wonderful, truly spiritual experience. A Church full of mutually supportive and hopeful Christians of all ages was a fantastic example of how church could be done, what church could be if the people of the congregation and their leadership wanted it to be that way. Returning to the old Church when I moved was one of the biggest disappointments of coming back.
