Some stories claim that the deportation and planned liquidation of the inhabitants was intended as sort of a "birthday present" for Hitler. When the SS arrived April 19 of 1943, they found they had a sparsely-armed but still active revolt on their hands. I think it is a moment in Jewish history that we should celebrate and be more proud of, but instead it gets downplayed.
