[livejournal.com profile] velvetpage demonstrated Venn diagrams to Elizabeth. Five minutes later - literally - Elizabeth produced a Venn diagram detailing the differences between novel and film versions of The Tale of Despereaux. I've not read the book or seen the film, but the common element is Despereaux himself, in the middle. The book is on the left, the movie is on the right. I know the movie has a cat in it, and the book doesn't.

You know, I didn't know what a Venn diagram was until I was in my 30s. Journalism degree, you see. :)

I hadn't really learned what a Venn Diagram was until just a year or two ago. Simply hadn't ever come across it before. I would have to say that this is probably the most coherent demonstration of how they work I've ever seen.

Lee.

Wow, fast learner! Give her Bongard problems next! ... Well, when she's bored, during a long car trip or something.

I had to look it up a bit ago due to Dakota having to do one for math. Don't think we ever had to do one so I was utterly clueless.

Venn Diagrams were taught in seventh grade math, where they were teaching us pre-algebra, but in the modern era of No Child Left a Dime there is a good chance that they don't teach them for cost-savings reasons. It took three days to make sure all the little rugratlings got it.

I always thought that it was a pretty simple concept, myself. I'm impressed that she was able to show so much comprehension of both the book and the movie, enought to know differences between the two, as well as what's common.

That's okay. I didn't know what it was until Elizabeth just explained it.

I didn't learn Venn diagrams until college.

She's a smart girl! And destined to do something very cool, I'm sure.

It's been so long, I forgot they had a name.

I was taught about them really young, like probably grade 2 or something.

That said, if I wasn't such a geek I probably wouldn't have remembered, since it was one of the many things that we were taught and then not touched on again for many years.
