Photo Post - Pyat's Monday

On Monday I took the new camera into work to give it a whirl. I took images at various points of the day from the moment I left the house until my final walk home.


6:20 AM - view from my front porch, looking east. The Haunted Police Car is parked in front of the house. Just over the school there was a fabulous crescent moon, which was unfortunately lost in this shot. I actually went back inside for the "good camera" to get a shot of it, before walking up the street to the bus.



6:45 AM - "Too much, magic bus!" I arrive downtown at the GO Station to hop on another bus to take me to Toronto. I generally take the train in the winter, when traffic is less predictable, but the bus has more comfortable seats, much more conducive to napping or noodling on a laptop. The 7:20 bus gets me to Toronto by around 8:40 AM, but that day I went in earlier. "GO" stands for "Government of Ontario." Socialized commuting!


8:15 AM Not quite my office. The St. Lawrence Market, where I take breakfast once a week. It's sunny and warm in this photo, but in the depths of winter coming into here from a cold dark street is like stepping into paradise. It's warm and smells of baking bread and frying bacon and a hundred different kinds of coffee and tea.


My greasy spoon of choice, Paddington's Pump, located in the front corner of the market.


I want to assure my readers that I don't usually get the Eggs Benedict. The book, a collection of Dominic Flandry stories by Poul Anderson, is a loan from mwbard. It's quite good!


8:55 AM - My office. Systematizing pedagogical transfers since 1997!


1 PM - After wolfing down lunch in the office, I wander out under blue skies to go on a ramble with commanderteddog. If I'm not mistaken, cargoweasel and axiomaxiom almost had a suite in that skinny white building.


Local film archivist and eccentric Reg Hartt has been running silent film and classic cartoon film festivals in Toronto for as long as I can remember. These posters decorate an underpass at the south end of Yonge Street.


As I've noted elsewhere, the amount of new construction happening in Toronto is incredible. I have no idea whether this reflects some kind of condo bubble, or legitimate demand for downtown housing.

There is a curious little park just off the Gardiner Expressway Yonge Street exit. The raised exit encircles the park.


Yet another new condo.


Along the waterfront - a gyros place. It's pretty good.


Captain John's is not so good.


2 PM - Heading back to the office. The shops along Front Street.


5:10 PM - Walking to the Hamilton bus.


5:15 PM - Waiting to board the bus. The Royal York reflecting gold from the Royal Bank building.


6:35 PM - Downtown Hamilton. "NO GURLS ALOUD!"


They're doing some kind of major renovation and reconstruction of Hamilton City Hall, and almost the whole block is fenced off.


Happily, one can still access the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. Though, frankly, I've never heard of anyone actually visiting the place.


Not actually the library. This is now a family courthouse.


Usually, the bus is filled with cranky people. On Monday, however, a curious freak of bus scheduling meant that I was the only passenger, all the way home.


7:00 PM - SMOKE O'CHUM! A phantom ad on the side of a really greasy spoon, a couple of blocks from my house.

I've actually visited the Canadian Football Hall of Fame! We went on a school trip when I was in elementary school. I quite enjoyed it, but then I'm a fan of the CFL. We got to see a little movie about the history of the league, and wander around rooms for each of the teams. Good times.

I've also visited the Football Hall of Fame, also as a school trip. We were bussed in from Flamborough to see it. Funny that the kid being schooled right in Hamilton is the one that didn't end up on a field trip there!

I think I'll do that when it gets a bit less grey and crap. It's about the farthest thing from a transdimensional biodome, regrettably. You can see some interesting stuff near us at this semi-finished web page (), though.

Very extrospective! Though Eggs Benedict make me quite ill at the sight of them, I have no idea how people can eat those things. ;-)

Ah, Reg Hartt posters. One of those things that every Torontonian recognizes, but that we're not exactly known for. Like those Black History Month brochures, and how "Facist Post" (with that spelling) was written in black paint on all the National Post newspaper boxes sometime around 2002-2003. (Later on the spelling became correct.)

I have to say that the current Black History Guide guys you see downtown are a lot cheerier than the ones you'd see in the early 90s. I remember seeing them get into fights with people, and they'd be very aggressive in their pursuit of the "suggested donation."

The only one on the bus ALL the way home?!?! Wow. I've been the only one on the bus before for a few stops, but usually at least one person gets on before I get home. Or sometimes I'll be the last one off... but I've never taken a whole bus ride anywhere being the only one on the bus. :o

Yup! Two King busses came within a minute of each other - the first one was overloaded, the second one was empty. I suspect there had been a breakdown or something. And everyone was getting on and off the first one, leaving me all alone on the second.
