[livejournal.com profile] commanderteddog and I went on a ramble yesterday, in quest of a sketch book for myself, and a copy of the Firefly for [livejournal.com profile] velvetpage. We acquired both items in good order, and en route we took a detour through the main buildings of my alma mater, Ryerson University (Altus Schola secundum Altus Schola!).

We wanted to take some photos of the Brutalist architecture and, also, is was warmer inside. While exploring the basement of Jorgenson Hall, we ducked into the underground tunnel that connects Jorgenson to Kerr Hall. At the Kerr Hall end of this windowless tunnel, there is a bulletin board. And upon this bulletin board:

Newspaper clippings about my step-brother-in-law, Josh McGuire, who is on Canada's Olympic Fencing team. He has no connection to Ryerson, but presumably the university fencing team has its office nearby.

This is the library. It's a big, big, box.

Yet, it still seems much warmer than the monolithic shopping mall they built across the street...

...on top of Ryerson's book store and old parking garage. The mall was not there when I went to Ryerson.

This addition to the School of Business, built since I left, is not bad at all.

Ahhh.... Trudeau-Era Concrete Buildings. Enfold me in your socialist embrace! Seriously, I've always connected this sort of architecture with happy times in my childhood. :)

Sam The Record Man is gone. :( I bought Talking Heads cassettes there!

The HUB Cafeteria! Considerably more upscale than it was in 1994. Where are the flimsy plastic chairs? The yellowed and scratched perspex windows? The smell of concrete dust? The rotting ceiling panels? Bah!

Worst park ever.

Like everywhere else in Toronto, condo highrises have sprung up around Ryerson in the last few years. And continue to appear.

More of 'em.

The back of the Flatiron Building, near my office.

Some bank buildings!

The top of the Royal York Hotel.

What's this?

Why, it was a close up of the CN Tower, of course! 500 feet taller than the WTC was. Though, of course, now that new monster building in Dubai has broken all records by a considerable margin.

And, home again, home again. Waiting for the bus in downtown Hamilton.

I wonder what's at exactly halfway...

Hey, man, don't dis the shopping mall. There's some really good food in there! (If it wasn't obvious, the proximity to decent cheap food is one of the main things I miss about my old job.)

Oh, I don't! I think it's wonderfully industrial and Bladerunny (runnery?). I dig the non-functional ventilation fans on the front, too.

And yes, good food. :)

Your step brother has a seriously awesome stage name. I didn't even know fencers got to have stage names. The Angellic Assassin! Sweet.

It means he kills angels for a living!

Gosh, how misleading! I thought it meant he killed regular people like an Angel does, with a flaming sword. Is that even legal in fencing?
