93 year old freezes to death in own home because the utility company put a "limiter" on his furnace without contacting him.

That's pretty much a 19th century handwringer drama play right there.

I read that in the paper today. Out of all the articles I read, this is the one that made me feel truly ill. Thank you for posting it, I couldn't.

The glorious US, where various corporate scum attempt to outdo Ebenezer Scrooge, what a country...

Psst.. Bay City Electric Power and Light is operated by Bay City.

The private utilities, like Detroit Edison (which I have) are much more heavily regulated here.

I have to say...the worst part was this line: "The city has begun questioning whether its rules and procedures for limiting or cutting off power need a major overhaul."

Oh gee...someone finally DIED because they don't give a crap. Maybe they should re-think that plan? But what about Mr. Company President's third summer home? It only has two gold plated pools!*

*summer home and/or pool may not exist...I'm just tired and mad

The worst part is that it wasn't even a private utility company. If it had been a private utility company, instead of one operated by the city, state law would've prohibited that action. So screwed up. ;_;

One can perhaps only hope that someone at the very top will face corporate manslaughter charges, or the local equivalent. Absolutely amazing. =:P

The top would be the mayor though. As this was a public utility.

No, it'd still be the corporate CEO. The utility is publically owned, but that doesn't mean the mayor tells them what do to.

I hate this country, it has all the artistic subtlety of a Jerry Bruckheimer film. Way to make the subtext into text, you hacks.
