I just accompanied [livejournal.com profile] commanderteddog on a walk up to the Hairy Tarantula, where she purchased her first set of gaming dice. She got a set of Werewolf ten siders, and a set of black speckled Chessex polyhedrals.

Her journey to the Dork Side is complete.

Hooray! The corruption continues!
Chessex...cool coincidence. We went to dinner last weekend at the home of a woman I met online who is a Germanist. Her husband teaches ESL, and I'd been told neither were particularly gamers. So, imagine my husband's suprise when the husband was listing some of the odd jobs he'd held (ESL doesn't pay well) and said "Well, I worked for this company for a while called Chessex...you've proably never heard of them." Hee!

Ooh. What did they do there at the "magic factory?"

You can NEVER have too many dice!

It's a rite of passage! Congrats to her!

She's a true nerd, now. :)

It should be noted that I got the Werewolf branded ones because all of the other ones were insanely overpriced or... pink. Although I like them, for they are a cool brown colour.

My Chessex polyhedrals, though? Badass.

But... they were pretty princess dice!

I hate to say this, because I love Hairy T, but in my experience, 401 Games across the street is better for dice.

Oh, probably. We didn't have enough time to walk up to 401 over lunch break, though.

I've meant to ask - you said I'd need a 'handful' of 10-siders. I have large hands. How many is a 'handful', exactly, in the vernacular of which you speak?

Oh, five or six is plenty. They usually sell 'em in tubes, or sets. :)

Oh.

I was thinking at least 15. 5 or 6 is "a few" imho.

I had similar thoughts. Which is why I made two trips for dice today. Glad I did, too. The two tubes of dice I bought on the first trip only had 1d10 apiece.

Yeah, in my experience, tubes of dice are usually D&D dice--meaning 1d20, 1d12, 3 or 4d6, 1d4, and percentile dice (1 normal d10, and 1d10 with 10, 20, 30, etc. instead of 1, 2, 3, etc.).

Exactly so; so, on the one hand, I am now substantially overstocked with dice I have no need for in the upcoming game. On the other paw, I have substantial projectile attention-getters in reserve if I see Pyat's attention start to drift during the game. So it's all good. n.n

D12s are *great* for spinning.

One day, maybe, we'll play Champions, the game where people regularly roll twenty six siders in one go.

So, eight would be a tad excessive, then.

Eight is enough!

The set I got came with ten. o.O

Well, right now my ready dice are eight mixed boxes (1d20, 1d12,2d10, d8, d6, d4 each pack a different 'flavor'), I got a couple packages of d10s (a green pack and a pink pack), two packs of 12 d6s (1 green&gold, 1 red&blue), a nine pack of d6 (green with white pips) and a novelty pack of five Dragon*Con d6s (yellow with black pips). I wish I could find the rest of mine. Yes, I have more... somewhere, with names like Majestic-12 and the Greys.
