The first paragraph from the first post of each month:

January 1st, 2008
Long-time readers may recall my habit of scouting the ground out for greasy spoons within a few days of acquiring a new job.

The first two posts of the day were a photo post from our NYE party and a description of gifts from online friends. This post goes on to describe my rediscovery of Paddington's Pump, a greasy spoon I eat at way too often.

When it snows in a large city at before dawn, the lights of the city are reflected back from the falling snow, giving the impression that the city has been covered with a large, transluscent orange bowl

This was actually from the 2nd post of the day. There was also a mobile voice post, and a reference to lunch with [livejournal.com profile] tzoq and, the previous day, with [livejournal.com profile] mwbard.

Not that I've actually been keeping up with the "Pic a day" thing, but here's one:

There are four posts from this day - the "Ask me anything" meme, a public post about [livejournal.com profile] velvetpage and I going downtown to a trade show, and a filtered post .

So, I've been thinking of an RPG in which the players portray a rock and roll band in space! This idea has been expressed before, but I think it would work especially well in “The ‘Verse,” the setting of Firefly and Serenity.

May 1st, 2008
Today, it was raining and cold, and I had it to myself, as it were. Given the date - significant for Pagans and early Christians - I decided to take a turn through the labyrinth. It was a curiously ruminative experience. It seemed to take a very long time indeed to get to the centre of the pattern, and the route twisted back and forth on itself, bringing me to unexpected quadrants of the greater circle. The route, outlined in salmon-coloured stone, reminded me variously of the nestled windings of an intestine (eew), the convulted strand of a knotted rope, or a path through a hedge. Coming to the centre at last generated a thrill of achievement, but upon arrival I also found myself very relaxed. Focusing on the task of wending through the maze sort of concentrated my attention, and I could see how doing this in the long term might create a kind of quiet trance state.

There were FIVE posts this day - talking about Soviet military parades, complaining about an updated version of "The Internationale," a link to a sample of my day job writing, and photos of sushi with [livejournal.com profile] tzoq.

My wife is a nerd.

I talk about Upton Sinclair, and quote one of his books:
"And then, explained Schliemann, society would break up into independent, self-governing communities of mutually congenial persons; examples of which at present were clubs, churches, and political parties. After the revolution, all the intellectual, artistic, and spiritual activities of men would be cared for by such "free associations"; romantic novelists would be supported by those who liked to read romantic novels, and impressionist painters would be supported by those who liked to look at impressionist pictures—and the same with preachers and scientists, editors and actors and musicians."

I'm going to try and take part in an August Writing community, writing bits of fiction now and again. It's been ages since I wrote anything but newspaper articles, instructional modules, and game colour text. So, here goes...

Photo of [livejournal.com profile] velvetpage, taken in 2000, I believe. I love her eyes.

You know, 330 million North Americans can’t all live at the cottage, or on a Luddite freehold. Cities (no, not suburbs) are the most efficient way to give us all a roof, supply us with food, support us, provide venues for collaborative research and art, and yes, wash away our excrement. We are now at point where we are incredibly well-fed, even overfed, yet have no idea how to produce that food ourselves. I don’t see that as a bad thing, but rather as a sign of a increasingly efficient society that is moving away from drudgery.

November 1st, 2008
I met [livejournal.com profile] velvetpage (not for the first time...) in 1993. She was just about to leave for a student exchange in France, and I wrote to her while she was gone. Some photos from that year...

[livejournal.com profile] velvetpage: Cute as a button and twice as hot.

December 1st, 2008
So, a former pastor of mine, the man who married [livejournal.com profile] velvetpage and I, is using Facebook to organize a political protest at Bob Rae's office.

There were FIVE posts that day - three art meme ones (which I need to finish), and a mention of lunch with [livejournal.com profile] nottheterritory and [livejournal.com profile] sassy_fae, and another lunch the next day at the Poutiniere with [livejournal.com profile] commanderteddog.

Generally speaking, I clearly eat out too much. :) And I like posting photos of my wife.

You know, you'all are doing this wrong. It's supposed to be ONE paragraph consisting of the first sentence of the first post of each month. So in essence a 12 sentence paragraph that may or may not make any sense. This...well...this is just...wrong!! It takes all the fun out of the meme...it's too cold and analytical with little bolded titles and all and makes it too clunky to actually read (yes, this means you too Sassy_fae!).

Wrong, wrong,wrong! *glare*

Uh... I think we're doing different memes!

But . . . I thought the whole point of a meme was a piece of knowledge or habit that works itself through the population, and takes on a life of its own as it goes. So Piet and Jenn have just engaged in the next generation of this meme, right?
