We loaded the girls into the Haunted Police Car this afternoon, and took them into downtown Toronto for a special treat. Yes, Australian supergroup "The Wiggles" were in town. I have to say, the bandmembers are clearly in very good shape. A few of them were doing the splits during the show.

And, they taught Captain Feathersword (the Friendly Pirate) all about Canada's ties to Australia through the Commonwealth, and the show concluded with "Rule Brittania!" in full chorus. Well, okay, not the last part.

The first stop, though, was buying candy in Union Station. You know how much the SkyDome Roger's Centre charges for food?

BEHOLD YOUR AUSTRALIAN OVERLORDS!

The show in progress...

Jeff, the Laugable Narcoleptic Wiggle, has fallen asleep in the midst of his wild gyrations once again.

Fall sunshine and colours.

The CN Tower and Roger's Centre.

After the show, we ambled through a park built on land that was, not too long ago, scarred wasteland owned by the Canadian National railways. Toronto is evidently booming, and about two dozen high-rises were in construction around us.

The beautiful Royal York Hotel, once the largest building in the British Empire, is rapidly losing its waterfront view.

These were built since I started working at CCI.

Construction is everywhere.

And that's all.

When did the SkyDome stop being the SkyDome?

I'm not sure - 3 years ago, maybe? Hardly anyone calls it the Rogers Centre, though.

I had no idea about that. I remember when it opened, and everybody was excited about the technological marvel. My parents took me to Toronto to visit it when I was a child.

There's a decrepit and run-down mall filled with old people, madmen and telemarketers here in Sarnia. It was called the Eaton's Center for ages, due to the Eaton's chain store there. But Eatons disappeared a long time ago, and was replaced by a government complex and a black-market store underneath. They changed the name to "The Bayside Mall", and occasionally call it "The Bayside Center" but lots of people still call it the Eaton's Center after all these years.

Or maybe that's just my mom. She also keeps calling Wal-Mart "WoolCo" and Shoppers DrugMart "Big V".

The same thing happened with 'The Eaton's Centre' in Guelph a bit over a decade ago.

Ditto the one in Hamilton! I still call it the Eaton's Centre.

I don't think there are any Eatons left. Didn't they go out of business years ago? It's a shame, but I suppose it's progress. They'll live on in the history books.

Rogers bought the Skydome in 2004 (for 4% the price of its construction), and announced in February of 2005 that it was changing the name from "The Skydome" to The "Rogers Center". I will continue to call it the Skydome, as that's what it is!

*is not good with change*

I visited the year it was built and got a little plush turtle named "Domer." I have not informed him of the takeover, I'm sure he'd be crushed (and that's difficult for a turtle!)

Some of the signs on the walkways toward the Skydome still say "Skydome" on them too, which amuses me to no end.

As for your Mom, one of the Walmarts near me used to be a Woolco, so I can understand that problem!

Oh, and if [livejournal.com profile] catsarah is reading this... *grins*
She's recently started calling all Shoppers Drug Marts "IGA"s, even though she's never shopped in an IGA. Being the good friend I am, I only refer to Shoppers as IGA in her presence now.

*giggles and goes to hide somewhere safe from Cats*

Yeah Wal-mart bought and replaced the old Woolco here, then built a super-walmart on the other side of the mall, and the Sears built a two-floor department store where the Woolco/Wal-mart used to be, and demolished the old Sears building due to waaaaaaay too much asbestos. The super-walmart was abandonned a year or two ago when Wal-mart built a new ultra-deluxe-super-walmart across the street, that has more variety than Putnam's Prairie Emporium. Everybody is frustrated about the huge hollow ghost of a store the old Wal-mart has become, since nobody moved in this time. The Ultra-deluxe-super-walmart is building a strip-mall around itself and moving a bunch of chain stores from the good Lambton Mall to serve as it's royal court. I'm worried the Lambton Mall might end up as bad as the Bayside Mall, full of ghosts and goblins and telemarketers.

They still have the SEARS, Toys-R-Us, and Canadian Tire, though. My father likes to tell me about the Canadian Tire sometimes. When he was a kid, it was just a little hardware shack off-downtown. When I was a kid, it was a big anchor store on the mall. Years ago they got a huge wad of cash from the Canadian Tire Fairy and became the biggest Canadian Tire in Canada for a little while. Only a little while, though, because the Canadian Tire Fairy was giving bigger wads of cash to other stores. ^.^;;

Ahh progress.

I never found out - did they actually buy the dome, or just the naming rights and promotional dealies?
