VirtualDub and avidemux are both similar transcoding programs. Unfortunately, video encoding is mystifyingly complex; it's always taken me multiple tries to get anything both a reasonable file size and quality level whilst still playing on any known Terran video player.

Yes, and it won't read the AVIs from one of my cameras, and can't find the codec.
