Behold, the Nerdening

So, I've uploaded the photos I took today on my outing with
commanderteddog, and I think we clearly have a match for the NexisCorp building in Overdrawn at the Memory Bank and the Esselte Building on Front and Yonge Street in Toronto. Observe:
Image from the movie. Note the support pillar, circled in red.

Taken today. Though taken from a dramatically different angle, you can see the same pillars.

Fingal meets his mother... sorta.

Notice the brackets on the railing, used to hold the fake plants in place, as well as the metal railing itself. I think I can be pretty sure this was the place.
Now, on to my next theory. Terry Gilliam watched Overdrawn at the Memory Bank before he filmed Brazil. Admittedly, there is far less evidence for that, but compare some screen shots:

Aram Fingal is a brilliant programmer, but he's a dreamer. He spends his time at work illicitly watching classic movies on his computer monitor.

Sam Lowry is a brilliant programmer, but he's a dreamer. He spends his time at work illicitly watching classic movies on his computer monitor. At one point, he also watches Casablanca, though we only hear it playing in the background.

Aram Fingal in his brutalitarian apartment, sparsely decorated with classic film posters.

Sam Lowry in his brutalitarian apartment, sparsely decorated with classic film posters.
And... well, actually, that's all I've got on that theory. Nevermind.

Date: 2008-09-12 11:49 am (UTC)If you're interested, the original story, same title as I recall, is in the anthology "The Persistence of Vision". My copy is goo... :(
Additional information: It is part of his "Eight Worlds" series of loosely linked stories/novels culminating (even though chronologically it's more a prequel, and not completely accurate) with Steel Beach -- highly recommended. I think Pakesh has my copy right now.

Date: 2008-09-12 02:46 pm (UTC)I believe that's the building which was used by Lavalin Engineers, during the 1980's. Bruno Willnick and I used to work there. I remember when the filming was done there was all kinds of American Money left on the edges. Bruno helped me gather some of the money of the ledges, by opening the windows in the Atrium. Too bad it was fake money. I might still have some of it, somewhere.
