Playing D&D (3.5 edition) at [livejournal.com profile] mar2nee's house - she's DMing.

The netbook is working well - I'm using it to play an online virtual "glass aromonica," the instrument my Gnome Bard uses.

Aren't glass armonicas really big? Isn't that like saying your Gnome Bard plays a Piano, and there's an imposition that they carry it on their back?

Also, you ARE aware that legends say the Glass Armonica causes whoever hears its haunting tune to go insane, right? 'cause that just makes it more awesome. <3

There were some semi-portable ones made - basically just a box about 2 feet long with a spindle through it. Jebwicket wears one strapped to his chest, and he rotates the spindle with a crank. The front of the box - the open part - is covered with a sort of wooden barred door that allows sound to escape, while protecting the glass bowls. He puts his hand through a slot in the side to play the bowls. [livejournal.com profile] paka did a sketch of it, once!

And yes, I do know those legends. Jebwicket is sort of a gloomy poet, along the lines of a singing Edgar Allen Poe, and he's fascinated by ghosts, so the instrument fits him well.

As I recall, that wasn't the sound, but the lead in the glass used at the time. The sound was just a convenient excuse since they didn't know about heavy metal poisoning in the late 18th century.

Oh? I don't know much about the history of the Glass Armonica, I only heard of it for the first time about 9-12 months ago. I thought that they originated in the 19th century. ^.^;;

Wow, that's a lot of history.

I decided to wiki the Glass Armonica (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass_Armonica) for quick reference.

Wiki sez the theory doesn't stand up - you can't get lead poisoning from touching leaded glass.

I'm pretty sure they just thought it drove people crazy 'cause it sounds so damn creepy. ^.^

I think it was that they where probably licking their fingers to moisten them. But makes more sense to me than the sound driving folks crazy.

He also has a donkey with him in the dungeon; I really have to read some rules.

Hey, my Armonica weighs so much, I need the donkey to carry the rest of my equipment.

Though, I admit I expected the donkey to be monster chow ages ago.
