Took a half-day off today so I could hang out with [livejournal.com profile] velvetpage, who came to visit me in Toronto. We had an excellent lunch at the Spaghetti Factory, then subwayed up Yonge to visit a few stores.

Hot Lunch Action!

I picked up curious little book by Sir Patrick Moore everyone's favorite good-natured monocle-wearing old windbag / astronomer. In it, he makes fun of crazy people. It sort of wavers between patronizing and amusing. I also picked up Dreaming Cities, the Tri-Stat Urban Fantasy RPG, because I have gamer friends who like fairies and such.

We also took in a matinee of The Mummy 3, mostly because we arrived too late for Dark Knight. I mostly liked the film, but it must be said that the supporting characters were about ten billion times more interesting than Lummox and Lummox Jr.

It, like the previous two films, was a very gamer movie, with the protagonists doing very RPGish things. It's nice to see the villains being mostly smart and competent in their pursuit of the heroes. General Yang was wonderfully hardcore, I thought. Look, he's punching a Yeti!

Also, Michelle Yeoh, Isabella Leong, and the actress with the uniform and the dueling scar?

Goodness, very nice indeed. :)

I liked the first film so much I used part of the female lead's librarian monologue in my application letter to Drexel. One of the deans told me the whole admissions committee lost an hour of work to Mummy quoting.

OH, cool. What was her monologue? :)

It was her drunken "I am a librarian!" speech--I don't remember the whole thing. This came about because, as I was trying to write the letter, I looked around in my study an realized that I hadn't thrown out a book since the 1980s. So the speech seemed to apply to me.
