I was tagged by [livejournal.com profile] used_songs:

Here's the rules:
1. Each player starts with 8 random facts/habits about themselves.
2. People who are tagged, write a blog post about their own 8 random things, and post these rules.
3. At the end of your post you need to tag 8 people.

1. I am wearing sandals and a pair of shorts today. This is the first time I have owned a pair of sandals since some point in early childhood. I usually wear dress shoes and chinos all year round. People say, "Pyat, it's hot out! Put on some sandals!" And I say unto them, "What am I? Moses?" But I guess if I'm going to California in the summer time, I should have a pair of sandals. I'll try not to wear black socks with them, or socks at all, but I don't promise anything.

2. I have earned more from writing RPG games than I have spent on them... but just barely. I've earned perhaps $3000 from RPG writing since 1999, and my collection represents an expenditure of about that much, though spread over 20 years. That's why I have a day job, and why I married a teacher!

3. Elizabeth has a Father's Day Present for me. She's hiding it in her room.

4. I need to swear off coffee and soda again. I've gained back 10 or so pounds of the 20 I lost, though all the walking and occasional working out has me in a generally more healthy place than I've been since... well... ever?

5. I wish I'd started going to fannish conventions earlier in life.

6. People seem to alternately assume that I am very, very, very dull, or aggressively strange in my private life. It just depends in what context you're meeting me, I guess, and what you consider strange and what you consider dull. I find a lot of people who wave their freak flags with an outrageous wardrobe actually turn out to be very banal.

7. I used to raise Zebra Finches.

8. In a few hours, I'm going to [livejournal.com profile] neosis's wedding! Huzzah!

Tag yourself, you lazy bums!

I really enjoy them! My only reason for hanging back was a kind of social phobia - "There are NERDS there!" Then I got over myself, and realized that they were just enthusiastic about the same sort of things that I liked, and bold enough to show it!

*nod*

In retrospect I'm not sure if it was a good thing or a bad thing in my teenage years. On the one hand, they gave me a place where I could just be myself, and interact with people that I liked interacting with. On the other hand, having such a refuge may have made me not try as hard to find people to be friends with at school.

2. I think I've easily spent more than 3k on RPGs since 1988 or so. I've never made any money by writing any, though.

4. Coffee is non-fattening by itself. It's the sugar and creamer that add calories.

5. I wish I could go to more conventions. I haven't been to one in probably 10 years or more.

6. I keep my freak flag rolled up unless I'm online/anonymous or talking to/with someone I know really well.

8. Have fun at the wedding!

"I find a lot of people who wave their freak flags with an outrageous wardrobe actually turn out to be very banal."

This couldn't be more true. Most of the truly strange people I've known have no idea that they are so strange, because what's strange about them to other people is just second (maybe first) nature to them.

The most thunderingly banal person I've ever known was someone who did a good deal of flying of the freak flag -- banal in the sense that for all of his wildness, he was a fundamentally boorish person whose biggest motivation was to look good in the eyes of others.

I... need new sandals. Thanks for the reminder!

Truthfully I wish I'd been a bit more active in meeting people at conventions when I first started showing up at GenCon and such years ago. Missed some chances there, I think.
