Stan Romanek of Denver, Colorado claims to have videotaped an alien peeking in his window, and walking around outside his house. Skeptics claim they can recreate the “alien” for under $100 with the right equipment. Film analysts have come forward, as usual, to say the film was not faked or altered. This simply means that no one has edited the physical tape or digital video. It does not mean the footage is of a real alien, merely that the media used to record something that looks like an alien was not altered.

Romanek was on Larry King, and CNN showed a fairly creepy video clip. It starts around 1 minute and 35 seconds in. However, note this video clip is the skeptic re-enactment. It’s being passed around here and there as the real thing. Obviously, I can’t say anything about the real footage, not having seen it, but the single screen cap that has been released is not very impressive at all.

Romanek wouldn’t show the real video on Larry King, not even in advance, privately. He has shown it to some representatives of a Denver newspaper, but they weren’t allowed to get copies or examine it, or rebroadcast it. Romanek claims that scientists are too busy working on it, and he wants all the evidence looked by scientists before sharing it. He claims it’s not up to him to release the video.

Now, Romanek is not new to the UFOlogy scene. He is being presented by some people as a completely disinterested average person, coming out now to give his story to the world. However, this video was shot five years ago, and Romanek has been very active in UFOology circles for at least that long. I’m actually a little bit surprised that he doesn’t have a Wikipedia page. He has a documentary and a non-fiction book coming out soon, and he certainly hasn’t been shy about releasing his previous UFO videos and photos.

Romanek claims to have been abducted by aliens several times since the age of 5, and also claims to be a channel for their advanced math equations, despite having a “4th grade math level.” These claims are well known to his friends and family, and to local astronomy buffs, UFOlogists, and others who have signed affidavits of their authenticity. So, in short, Romanek is not a “man in the street” with no exposure to existing UFO culture and theories (conspiracy and otherwise). He has been steeped in the UFOlogy world for years now.

Romanek’s supposedly alien calculations are generally pages of complex looking equations, along these lines:

His webpage notes scientists are "still working to understand" his equations.

Romanek also draws star charts. The diagram below was originally presented as a star chart predicting a huge catastrophe due to take place on December 12, 2003.

When nothing catastrophic happened on that date, Romanek’s friends claimed it must actually refer to the capture of Saddam Hussein.

The way I see it, there are three basic possibilities.

1. The video depicts a real extraterrestrial, or a terrestrial creature of a kind not known (or not publicly acknowledged) by science.
2. Romanek faked the video with a puppet or costume.
3. Romanek is the victim of a hoax, perpetrated by someone who is aware of his abduction claims.

I am leaning toward #3.

I do hope the real footage is widely released soon. It would be uncharitable of me to suggest the actual reason Romanek has been leery of releasing it is that he needs time to record a more impressive fake.

There is some evidence to suggest that people who claim alien abductions have been sexually molested as children, and that this can be a method used to present the fact that something DID happen, while safely blocking out the name of the perpetrator(s) ... since to the child, this kind of assault would be impossible to report for safety or other reasons. So, a form of dissociative disorder.

Another common explanation is sleep paralysis, a state that I have experienced myself, and I can attest to how creepy and real the perceptions can be.

As a narcoleptic, I've experienced sleep paralysis quite frequently (hate it) and it does NOT resemble alien abduction. Even worse is waking-paralysis, when the REM switch kicks on even though one is fully conscious. Had that once or twice and really really hated it. Although I can see someone who isn't familiar with borderline sleep paralysis and who is in a sort of dream-like state, coming up with explanations for why it's happening.

...and it does NOT resemble alien abduction.

Perhaps not yours. I certainly have hallucinated (or had a waking dream) of helplessly floating the air to a window, for example, or felt I was being dragged across the bed. My upbringing caused me to interpret this as demonic attack, but in another household I might have blamed it on aliens, witchcraft, ghosts, etc.

Before I knew what was going on, and because of a sense of malevolence that accompanied them, I attributed some of them to "demonic oppression" ... and certainly prayer helped me cope with the panic ... but yeah, I can see other people having different interpretations.
The "alien abduction" reports are generally quite detailed and vivid, with consistent descriptions of the "greys" and so on, which is more in line with reconstructed/dissociated memories where PTSD is involved. It would be interesting to test the various people reporting these things for both syndromes.

The equations look like gibberish to me. They look like he incorrectly copied equations off the quick reference sheet in my Electromagnetics text book. There's even a diagram that resembles, sort of, a picture of how induction works. If you're going to present "alien" equations, use Predicate Logic. That's got totally cool language. Better yet, use the Berber script. That looks bitchin. It's all geometric.

I'm suspicious of any alien that resembles the Ara 51, grey stereotype.

Given the dual explanations of 1) parasomnias and 2)PTSD/incomplete memories of child molestation, one wonders why any alien abduction stories are seriously considered. Well, the best reason I guess is that alien lore is part of our modern mythology (since WWII). "Alien" serves as both a symbol of The Self (a unifying principle, or sum of all knowledge) and of The Shadow. This seems to explain why in movies and literature, aliens are either saviours or murderous, colonizing villains.

That is, our brains create the conditions for "alien abduction" and our psyches fill in the colours and details with archetypal symbols. I've seen this in clinical practice. For centuries, schizophrenic people would describe their symptoms of lack of volition as being "possessed by demons". Nowadays, the demon explanation is still common, but patients are just as likely to say they're being controlled by aliens. Fascinating stuff.

There is actually a large body of literature and "scholarship" in American fundamentalist Christianity trying to claim that aliens are both demons and from another planet.

This stems from the 70s, when a lot of wannabe contactee groups started getting into New Age mysticism, which was regarded as a revival of the pagan practices of Babylon. So, I've actually read books claiming that the Antichrist was going to be an alien, or have alien allies.

That's why I like Fortean Times. It's about half weird crap from around the world and half a history of people talking about weird crap, and the second is, of course, way more interesting.
