Table Talk

Our house has accurately been described as "densely furnished." It really is. While we have a fair sized abode, we have packed it to the gills with a piano, bookshelves, chairs, tables, and other sundry bits of furniture that we've acquired from IKEA, elderly relatives, and junk stores.

Yesterday, we took possession of an absurdly large table. I am uncertain of its dimensions, but it certainly... dominates the room. It seats six by default and accommodates eight comfortably. The chairs are solid and magisterial, fairly reeking of bourgeoisie middle-class. The table is about six inches higher than our previous table, meaning that I can finally host dinners and game nights without having everyone hunched over like some no-good punk kids on the Barton bus.

I can sit down at the head of this table, and overlook that vast expanse of polished wood, and imagine myself as "High Priest in the Temple of Jollity," raising toasts at friendly dinners, or slinging dice on game nights. I look forward to baptizing it by fire, with a game session or friendly potluck, at the soonest opportunity.

"Well, hello, friend! You've just caught me in the middle of my nightly debauch. Yes, ha ha! A hot mug of tea, and an improving book! Oh, but I am full of le whimsy, am I not?"

That's a mighty table you've got there, friend. Now, here's the question: Can people actually sit along the sides? ;)

I envy you and your gaming table. The missus and myself have been without adequate gaming facilities for so long it's disgraceful.

"Okay. So when did our game go from fairly low-key information gathering to a Mordheim-like sprawling urban battle with over fifty figures, plus dice to represent effects and missing minis?"

"Since the GM got this new table he wants to show off."

[livejournal.com profile] chronovius is quite vehement for your need of a monacle.

Is that a window quilt behind you? How's that with the draft-blocking?

I would happy replace my glasses with a monocle, if I thought I could get away with it.

And yes, it is a window quilt. However, the window behind me leads to another room, so it's function is mostly one of maintaining the illusion of a wall.

Ah, so a crafty revolutionary can leap out from behind the curtain quilt and slay the tyranical overlord! Cool!

Stabbed through a curtain?

"Oh, I am slain!"

So, that makes it the table Not where you eat, but where you are eaten! Aaahahahahaha!!!

Yes, I make that mistake quite a lot. However, it's a matter of "muscle memory" rather than ignorance. I understand the usages well enough.

I figured as much. It was a reflex, on my part, to correct it. Usually I jump up and down and whine, too. The kids think it's funny.

That's no table. That's a space station!

Hrm. Actually upon further consideration I realize its true purpose. To serve as the rooftop to an Elisabethian kneecap fortress.
