Brand new holiday in Ontario this year - "Family Day."

In Manitoba they're celebrating "Louis Riel Day." To a white Upper Canadian, this is sort of like hearing that they celebrate Benedict Arnold Day in portions of the U.S.

Elizabeth seems to be enthralled - or at least impressed - by the Terry Gilliam verion of The Adventures of Baron Munchhausen. Sadly, it's one of those movies I approve of without actually being able to sit through, most of the time. Something about the execution always strikes me as a bit off. I dunno why. Maybe it's just the presence of Robin Williams as the King of the Moon. Bits of it are individually brilliant.

That isn't one of the best bits, but Youtube isn't giving me the gold. :P

I can't sit through Munchhausen either. The only times I've ever watched it was when I was cleaning or cooking or working on something and didn't have to pay attention the whole time.

If I was going to partake in illegal drugs, though, I'm sure it'd be one of my favorites.

That is actually the case with me. I can put in on as background noise and ignore the clunky bits.

Perhaps your subconscious is disturbed watching Sara Polley in that movie, as her mother had not yet died of cancer. (She passed away a year later.) Sara had not yet reached the dizzying heights of fame and independent wealth (by age 14) playing Sara Stanley on "Road to Avonlea", or experienced the subsequent disillusionment of the Disneyfication of the Avonlea franchise (I'm not making this up... check out http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001631/bio).

Perhaps the protective dad in you finds it painful to watch her without being able to reach into the screen and warn her that pain and suffering are imminent.

I remember really hating her when I first saw the movie. The 14-year-old me wanted more cannons and absurdity, and less screaming little girl. Later, I was really scornful of Avonlea because it had "that little annoying kid from Munchausen."

I grew out of it, I think. :)

Really? Disney blacklisted her? WHy? I always found her annoying as an actress but I admired that she wanted to work on Canadian films and in the Canadian industry and not sell out to the American pop culture. Writing that I am not sure why I admire that in her but I do.

I saw her in that horrible Beowulf and still didn't enjoy her as an actress though I didn't watch much of the movie it was so painful.

We learnt a lot about Louis Riel when we lived in Manitoba for three years. We visited his homestead and monument. Yeah, thrilling lives we lead. :)
