I predict John McCain will probably win the election down south, though perhaps by an inconcievably narrow margin. It strikes me that both sides draw support from very stratified classes of voters, and the numbers don't change much. (I ignore, for now, the possibility of coordinated voting fraud, though I do not think it a zany conspiracy theory. That sort of thing happens around the world, all the time.)

That said, choosing Palin as a veep will at least make the shallower sort of Republican happier about voting for McCain, because she's young(ish) and personable, and has never, ever sang "Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran" to the tune of "Barbara Ann".

The problem with two-party politics is eloquently expressed, I think, by The Parable of Mouseland.

Or, you can listen to the orginal narration.

I took some time off work this afternoon - I'm working from home - and went driving with Elizabeth. She tells great stories, and has an excellent memory for a 5-year-old. She recognizes her day care.

As we drove, she had a thought:

"Dad, if everyone in the whole world was a cupcake, we would all dream of growing up to be cakes."

So, on our jaunt, we bought a refurbished 17" LCD monitor for the Fortress computer.. and put a deposit on an Acer Aspire One. This is the tiny sublaptop thing, with a 120 GB HD, Windows XP, extended battery, wireless, etc., etc. It seems it'll be handy for freelancing, working while commuting, and even basic video editing and the like. I'm going to load up all my old Champions/GURPS/Hackmaster/AD&D windows utilities on it, for use in games.
