CNN Headline: Hidden city under L.A.

Actual story - as many as ten homeless people lived under a highway overpass. Until the city cleared them out.

Geez, that is so un-newsworthy. Especially since there are a couple of weird underground sites where people either hang out or live to some degree. Back before LA county started rebuilding the subways, there used to be a large section of abandoned subway tunnels near down town and another section somewhere around USC. Those two places when not fenced off were fairly notorious for heroin dealing. Also, the LA river/flood control system goes under the built up parts of the county in many places. I even drove a car through a one of them. Very scary that was. But, yeah, homeless people camp in some of those places too. If CNN was really serious about the grown of the homeless in So. Cal, they'd be looking a two things: First, how many people are living out of vans and campers. There was a lot of this during he 1970s when Stagflation hit a lot of people. The second thing to look at is how many families are living in friends' garages. This is how a lot of poor, in my neighborhood, Mexican families coped with the loss of a job. They'd go live in a friend or relatives garage until they got things back together enough to rent again. With this recession, that has to be going on again and this time it ain't just happening to brown people either.

Darn, and here I was imagining an entire community living in the sewers with level after level of shacks connected by rope bridges and ladders, with the residents practicing neo-shamanism or as an outcast group of vampires or werewolves or something.

You know, something cool and WoD-like, not America's usual answer to the problems of homelessness.
