The history of English Channel tunnel/bridge proposals is really quite interesting.
A mid-19th century cross-channel tunnel sounds ridiculous, maybe. But remember, this is probably the guy they'd have got to dig it:

Mr. Isambard Kingdom Brunel digs wherever Mr. Isambard Kingdom Brunel wants to dig. And he'll smoke 40 cigars a day and go without sleep!
(And, PS, he thinks those Steampunk goggles make you look French.)
