The history of English Channel tunnel/bridge proposals is really quite interesting.

A mid-19th century cross-channel tunnel sounds ridiculous, maybe. But remember, this is probably the guy they'd have got to dig it:

Mr. Isambard Kingdom Brunel digs wherever Mr. Isambard Kingdom Brunel wants to dig. And he'll smoke 40 cigars a day and go without sleep!

(And, PS, he thinks those Steampunk goggles make you look French.)

I think if I ever have a child, I will petition for their middle name to be Kingdom. .Maybe they would hang out with Moxie Crimefighter..

Although, holy moses, chain links that size are incredibly steampunk.

Those are the launching chains for his 4,000 passenger ship, The Great Eastern (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Great_Eastern).

Wow, it feels like the Channel Tunnel has been around for ages, but it's not been that long at all.
I'm fascinated by the science of tunnelling and mining, but the claustrophobia would invariably drive me batty! (And not in the way bats enjoy, what with their living in caves and tunnels and such.)
