On Day Two (Saturday) of Pentacon, [livejournal.com profile] normanrafferty and I were roused by the sound of "The Entertainer" as played by [livejournal.com profile] vandringar's cel phone. [livejournal.com profile] vandringar was in Ohio, but his cel phone travelled with [livejournal.com profile] normanrafferty, it seems. We showered and then went on to breakfast in the Desoto Cafe, attached to the hotel, and ventured back to the dealer's hall for another day of battle.

Things in the hall continued quietly. We played more games of The Great Space Race with Jolly Blackburn and sold a smallish number of books. Mr. Zodo ran game events. The relative peace was broken by the sudden arrival of the Stoneburners - [livejournal.com profile] halfelf and beautiful missus, [livejournal.com profile] hammergrrl.

Charming couple, or Landsraad restricted atomics?

The couple had travelled all the way from Cincinnati for the con, and it was very nice to see them. They're both friends of [livejournal.com profile] normanrafferty, and I've good conversations with [livejournal.com profile] halfelf online. There are people with whom, upon meeting them of the first time, you have no trouble starting a real friendship. It was precisely that way with [livejournal.com profile] halfelf and [livejournal.com profile] hammergrrl - we got along like a house on fire, without any initial awkwardness. We went to lunch (gyros again) and had a good talk about politics, gaming, FurryMUCK, and what have you.

The afternoon was spent largely in the dealer's room, playing more games of The Great Space Race and browsing. I also wandered the con a fair bit, and spent some time in the games room, looking for a copy of the fabled Darkus Thel, which was being sold by the authors. My impression that Darkus Thel was being played constantly was not in error - no less than 14 Darkus Thel games were scheduled between Friday and Sunday - making me more curious than ever as to the actual nature of the game.

During the afternoon, construction began on a large Pokemon card castle. Later, it was demolished with hurled pocket change.

[livejournal.com profile] normanrafferty busied himself with the production of disturbing art!

As the sun set, [livejournal.com profile] normanrafferty and Jolly Blackburn were called upon to serve as judges for the costume contest. While this event was relatively small, the entrants were all quite good. Strangely, they were all women. By double coincidence, they all seemed to be players or writers for... Darkus Thel! Conspiracy!

A mage!

A Lynx Warrior!

The Costume Contest Entrants - all female Darkus Thel players!

After the contest, we wandered out into the curiously empty streets of Fort Wayne in search of supper. As we left the convention hall, we passed very young people in military dress uniforms and middle aged people in tuxedos and actual diamond tiaras and mink stoles. There was some kind of Air Force formal on in the convention hall, in the room next to Pentacon, and the teenage pilot recruits and their parents looked curiously at the fat and bearded veterans of a thousand Little Wars.

We agreed on a gourmet pizzeria, only to find it (and most of the rest of the city) closed at 8 PM on Saturday night! I shot video of our wild wanderings - http://media.putfile.com/Downtown-Fort-Wayne (Hopefully that link will work)

We found another restaurant, and were soon joined by Jolly Blackburn, who happens to be an old friend of [livejournal.com profile] normanrafferty. Rafferty used to do art for Shadis, and illustrated the first few covers of Knights of the Dinner Table. The food was excellent, though the waiter was very... touchy feely. A pleasant surprise was the later arrival of Lew Herring - the man whose antics at the Jolly's RPG table largely served as the inspiration for the fictional Bob Herzog, stalwart Knight of the Dinner Table!

Fictional Lew.

Real Lew.

Now, Lew was much nicer than his comic book counterpart, and much less bald. However, his voice was exactly like the voice I imagined Bob as having... I ducked out just before dessert, as I was suffering from clenched bowels of despair tummy trouble, likely the result of two full days of greasy restaurant food. Still, the night I dined with the original Hackmasters will live long in my memory!

On my scuttling way back to the hotel, I didn't see a single person walking around in downtown Fort Wayne. I walked down a blind alley out of curiosity (I thought it was a shortcut), and came across a surreal vision - a glowing tree in a kind of square or courtyard at the end of the alley.

Fat Canadian staring at a magic alley tree.

A hot time in the old game chamber with [livejournal.com profile] hammergrrl and [livejournal.com profile] halfelf

[livejournal.com profile] normanrafferty and the Stoneburners arrived at the hotel about 15 minutes after I did - apparently, the party had broken up when I left. (They always do, you know!) We chatted for a bit, and then decided to head to the gaming area for a round of Fury of Dracula. We got kicked out of the gaming area at 11:30 PM, and wandered off to bed. I had to share a smallish double bed with [livejournal.com profile] normanrafferty - a bad thing since we are displace large amounts of air. I occupied a relatively tiny slice of bed. When I fell out around 1 AM, I didn't bother to get back in. I grabbed an extra pillow and wedged myself between wall and bed, and slept incredibly soundly thereafter.

And that was Day Two of Pentacon.

It's hard to tell from the picture, is that new Fury of Dracula or old Fury of Dracula?

Cool. I own both editions, but haven't played the second one yet. I liked the first edition, but thought it was just a bit too long for its own good. I've heard good things about the second edition.

(And, as for the Warrior Knights redo by FFG: yay. I really like it.)
