Watching SF with Elizabeth

Elizabeth asked to watch The Black Hole. She made the following comments:

(After hearing VINCENT speak, a robot character voiced by Roddy McDowall)
"Oh! He's Britishian. But how does he make his voice all vibratey?"

"Are they Jedi?"

"I bet if they get sucked into the Black Hole they find the big red robot."

I'd still like to see that movie all the way through with you sometime!

I'm curious, did she find it scary? I wish I still had the link, but a long time ago I read a really interesting article that had interviewed the special effects people who'd worked on it. Walt Disney Pictures was apparently getting everyone to switch over to more modern ways of doing special effects, and the effects crew of The Black Hole tried to do everything in the traditional/old school way as possible (1960/early 70s-style, I guess), as an homage to methods they saw were going to be replaced. They claimed it was one of the last films of its kind, effect-wise, although whether that was actually true or not, I have no idea. :P

She did find it scary - we've only ever managed to watch highlights. She really likes the robots and laser fights, but insists on skipping past any part with creepy music or scary bits.

Also, I've always been of the opinion that "The Black Hole" was the great SF movie of the 1950s... it was just made 20 years too late. Everything about it, almost, has a classic SF look and feel. It has a LOT more in common with Forbidden Planet than Alien.

Ha, she was indeed right..

I watched a video the other day that had me imagining the Cygnus before it all went wrong: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydNbuB6PLiU

Ring Modulator. Phaser. Delay line. Reverb. These are the cornerstones of the Robot Voice. Your daughter is embarking on a long, rewarding journey. Ah, to be young again. n.n

You know, Nicholas Briggs had to bring his own ring modulator for the new show, cause the Beeb had gotten rid of theirs, and couldn't replicate the voices digitally?

I saw it on WIKI!
