Congratulations, [livejournal.com profile] summerfields!

My little sister Anneke and her husband Craig have graduated from the Salvation Army Officer Training College. They'll be formally commissioned/ordained tomorrow, and assigned to a church somewhere in the American West Territory, which encompasses everything from New Mexico to Alaska to Guam.

Cadets Craig and Anneke Summerfield - soon to be Lieutenants. Anneke was valedictorian and delivered an excellent address. Which we missed. Because we were stuck in Cleveland. Yay!

Anneke pinning a "silver star" on my mother, who gets one as the parent of an officer.

My father found the flag for his commissioning sessions ("Companions of Christ") in a room attached to the chapel.

Tonight we're meeting [livejournal.com profile] snobahr and [livejournal.com profile] chronovius for supper!

Forgive my naïveté, but once they're assigned somewhere, what do they do? ..In any case, congrats! :-D

I'm also very sorry about Cleveland. I had to go there once a year as a child to visit relatives I never liked very much. In a suburb of Cleveland. (shudder) That city has produced some of North America's most deranged cartoonists.

...what do they do?

Most are assigned to run a church - others are running shelters or other direct charity functions. I believe most new officers end up with a church, and then get moved to the charity side of things as they gain experience.

Ah, ok. When you used the word "pastor" in a later post I misinterpreted it as a statement of activity rather than an analogy of rank.
