Werewolves of New Mexico

Last night was the first installment of the Werewolf: The Forsaken game, set in 1867 New Mexico. It was... interesting. Present were [livejournal.com profile] catsarah, [livejournal.com profile] commanderteddog, [livejournal.com profile] ruiskafleck, [livejournal.com profile] velvetpage and [livejournal.com profile] wggthegnoll. [livejournal.com profile] momentrabbit was absent with a prior commitment, and therefore missed all the letter-reading, whiskey-slugging, cowpoke-staring, deputy-baiting, river-trail-hiking, cupboard-opening fun!

I have promised to the players that the game will NOT be unduly influenced by either SCTV's Western Serial spoof, "Six Gun Justice," nor the 1935 sf/musical/western/action/romance serial that inspired it... The Phantom Empire:

FEATURING THE SCIENTIFIC CITY OF MURANIA! ROBOTS IN COWBOY HATS! How DARE you speak to ME of CIRCUMSTANCES!!

Goodbye, FLGS!

Hamilton Hobby Specialities is closing down, after something like 40 years. I went there regularly from 1983 until about 1993, when he stopped stocking RPGs. I started buying model airplanes, then model rockets and 1:72 scale soldiers. 1:72 was my chosen scale because it was cheap. I spent many hours in the backrooms, trying to decide whether or not to spend my $4 on a box of 1:72 Zulus or a 1:72 Fokker triplane.

In 1988 I discovered his RPG section, and bought (over the course of 5 years):

James Bond
Justice Inc. - I remember excitedly telling my friend Bill, "It's like an RPG for Doc Savage!"
Champions - I described this as "Like Justice, with more points."
Paranoia
And a bunch of Doctor Who supplements and D&D minis.

In 1993 or so, his RPG stock disappeared, and I never summoned the nerve to ask where it had gone. I still went there a few times a year to pick up 1:72 figures for specific game settings, or look at (but never buy) military and airplane model kits.

TWO things!

First, I said in my previous entry that Hamilton Hobby Specialties was closing after 40 years. I was wrong. They're closing after 61 years. (Gosh.)

Second... the missing RPG stuff?

THEY BROUGHT IT OUT. THE VAULTS WERE OPENED!

It was in storage all this time! I was there! I saw it! Treasures fine and rare! Timeship modules! Star Frontiers adventures! Stuff for Chill! 2nd edition Gamma World GM screens! A bin full of Ral Partha figs!

I didn't see anything newer than 1988. Everything is shrinkwrapped and pristine. All books are $10, flat, no matter the cover price. Minis are $5 a pack, or $20 for 5 packs. The one snag - there don't appear to be any core rulesets left, or at least none are currently on display.

*runs around* I bought.. I bought things! I don't even know what they are!

Hamilton Hobby Specialities! 236 Kenilworth Ave North! Apparently, they will continue bring up old stock over the next few weeks until the building is sold.

I for one will be going back every Saturday.

Pyat and the Appliances of Doom

So, our dryer went bust, and got fixed today. And then the laundry tub got royally clogged this afternoon. A half-litre of sulphuric acid cleaned the clog.. and then our cable internet died.

I'm connected on a single bar of wireless from someone named Mike.

As such, [livejournal.com profile] velvetpage and I may be scarce online for a day or two till this is sorted.

In better news. we took the girls for a play date with [livejournal.com profile] doc_mystery and [livejournal.com profile] mrs_dm's little girl, and ate pizza and watched Hawk: The Slayer.
